The period of transition from high school to college is often challenging for even the highest achieving students.

The structured environment of high school, whereby students are dependent upon educators for many decisions regarding their academic lives, is starkly contrasted by the college environment. As many students struggle to adjust to new expectations, it is no surprise that nearly one-third of all college students in the United States drop out of college before completing a degree.

For students with learning differences, the college transition process may be especially taxing. The College Transition Program is designed specifically with this in mind. The CTP promotes student success by focusing on three primary areas: academic and executive function coaching, writing development, and tutoring in introductory college courses.

Academic and Executive Function Coaching

Modern Academics coaches students to identify their learning needs, to maximize compensatory cognitive, organizational and time management strategies, and to increase self-advocacy skills in order to establish necessary on-campus relationships (e.g., office of disability services, learning resource centers, etc.).

Writing Development

Assistance with a variety of written assignments is offered. The organizational aspects of writing are particularly given attention, including pre-writing, forming a thesis, finding sources, generating an outline, drafting the essay, and revising/editing.

Tutoring For Introductory
College Courses

Tutoring is available for both introductory college level courses in math, science, and psychology, as well as remedial courses.

CTP Standard Service Package

While the program differs according to the needs of each student, the following list represents a standard service package:

  • 30-45 minute individual online sessions, 5 days per week (Mon.-Fri.) during the college semester

  • Assistance with study skills, organizational and time management skills

  • Regular review of course syllabi and grades to ensure students are on track with assignments

  • Teaching compensatory learning strategies (close reading skills, mnemonics, note-taking skills, chunking, visual and auditory techniques)

  • Assistance with emails to the disability office, professors, and with internship applications, etc.

  • Assistance with writing development

  • Assistance with navigating and utilizing campus services,
    e.g., making appointments with the on-campus tutoring center;
    following up with professors, etc.

The College Transition Program is currently offered online to college students in the United States. Modern Academics carefully considers prospective students for the program. In order to offer the best individualized service, there is a limited number of students accepted into the program each semester.
